부채는 순수한 우리말로 손으로 부쳐서 바람을 일으킨다는 뜻의 `부`자와 가는 대나무 또는 도구라는 뜻의 `채`자가 어우러져 이루어진 말로서 `손으로 부쳐서 바람을 일으키는 채`라는 뜻이다.
부채를 한자로는 선이라하는데, 이는 집이나 문을 뜻하는 호자에 날개를 뜻하는 깃 우를 합하여 이루어진 글자로 집안에 잇는 날개라는 뜻이기도 하다.
접부채의 편 모습을 바탕으로 두고 새겨진 내용은 수부귀의 삼복문자를 새겼다.
