가운데 발가락의 발톱은 다른 종과 달리 빗살 모양이다. 

대부분 야행성이지만 쇠부엉이처럼 낮에 활동하는 종도 있다. 

다른 야행성 조류와 마찬가지로 깃털이 부드러워 날아다닐 때 거의 날개소리가 나지 않는다. 

대표적인 종으로 쇠부엉이 외에 칡부엉이·수리부엉이·솔부엉이 등이 있다. 

‘고양이 얼굴을 닮은 매’라고 해서 묘두응(猫頭鷹)이라고도 불렸다. 

‘고양이 묘(猫)’는 70세 노인을 뜻하는 ‘모(크)’자와 음이 비슷해 장수를 상징하기도 한다.

In Korea it was designated as a Natural Monument on November 4, 1982. 

As a species protected worldwide as well as in Korea, the owl has the nature of catching and accumulating whatever it preys on, so it symbolizes wealth. 

It is also called myo-du-eung (猫頭鷹), where myo (猫, meaning cat) signifies longevity as well, because it is pronounced similarly to the Chinese character "mo (耄)" meaning "70-year-old people." 

The ancient Greeks called the owl "the goddess of wisdom" or "the friend of Athens." 

The owl`s big eyes light up the darkness like a lantern, inspiring us to shake off anxiety and move forward.
